Keeping Alpacas, what you need to know?

Keeping Alpacas in 2025, what you need to know?

Hey there! Just a few tips about caring for your adorable alpacas! They’re happiest with fencing similar to what you would use for sheep, so try to avoid barbed wire, and don’t forget to provide some lovely shade in each paddock to keep them comfortable.

It’s also super helpful to have a cozy yard or catch pen for those important welfare checks. This way you can easily give injections or catch your animals when it’s time for shearing.

Creating fenced laneways between paddocks is a fantastic idea! It’ll make moving your furry friends around a breeze, minimizing stress for both them and you.

If you’re considering breeding alpacas, having dedicated quarantine and nursery paddocks is essential. It’s best to place the nursery paddocks in a nice sheltered spot, close to your house, so you can keep a close eye on the expectant mothers as they go into labor.

As for the quarantine paddock, positioning it on the property boundary or near your handling facilities works well. Adding wash down facilities there is a great touch too!

And remember, any new or sick animals should be settled in the quarantine paddock until they’re feeling better or have had a vet check-up.

This way, they can safely transition without bringing any unwanted weed seeds from their previous homes.

Wishing you and your alpacas all the best!

what to feed alpacas

What to feed your Alpacas?

If you’re wondering how many alpacas your property can happily support, it really depends on the type and amount of pasture you have available. Generally, these adorable creatures munch through about 2% of their body weight in feed each day, and they love to graze on pasture all the time.

They’re quite content on native pastures, but you can also spoil them a little with some good quality hay or grains.

Just a friendly tip: like other livestock, alpacas can be sensitive to some types of forage, such as perennial ryegrass and phalaris, so it’s a good idea to chat with your vet about any health concerns you might have, including the risk of certain diseases and testing options.

Also, don’t forget that your alpacas will need fresh, clean water available at all times. They can drink up to 4 liters a day! With the right care, your alpacas will thrive and be happy members of your property!
